From Gallup, New Mexico to Homer, New York holds the history for Southwest Collections. Owner Sharon Livingston, grew up on the Navajo Reservation in the mountains of Gallup, New Mexico. One of six siblings Sharon and her family lived off the land in a traditional, simplistic home for years. Jewelry and Native American craft making had been in Sharon's family for years and passed onto her at a very young age. Her skills were taught to her by her mother Marie Livingston. Sharon went on to continue her education in Colorado to become a teacher, then returned to the reservation to teach Kingergarden and First grade. In 2000 Sharon relocated to Cortland, New York and took a position as a director to a local Head Start Program. On weekends and holidays Sharon brought her unique style of native jewelry to the public at farmers markets and craft shows around Central New York. The public responded well to this unique art, which prompted Sharon to open Southwest Collections in November of 2005. Sharon wanted to make jewelry available to her customers and general public on a more consistent basis. The store is located in the heart of Homer and features such stones as turquoise, shell, coral and many silver pieces. Southwest Collections also features many local artisans. The store has oil paintings by Al Livingston, Brian Little, Barbara Reich, and fine woodworking by a local craftsman Scott Bean and Hand carved flutes by Al Cleveland, maker of grammy award winning Native American flutes. While Southwest Collections carries a large selection of Southwestern crafts, Sharon continues to add new and unique items to the store. Southwest Collections is located at 1 North Main St. Homer, New York. The store can be contacted at 607-749-2913 for hours and directions. Make the trip to experience the history of the Southwest.
